Chapter Fifteen

~

The turret instantly turned in his direction, and ball bearings whirred as the cannons began spinning. Apollo leapt to the side before turning to run. The tree he had been standing beside exploded in a cloud of splinters as 20mm rounds tore it to pieces. Diving to the ground, Apollo rolled behind another tree and whipped around.

The Mech took two wide steps and began sprinting towards him, weapons still firing. For now, over Apollo’s head.

The machine lifted a leg high in the air. It slammed into the ground, closing another ten meters of the distance. It picked up the other leg as a burst of rounds spit up dirt and rocks at Apollo’s face. The Mech put its right foot down, two meters directly in front of the mine.

Apollo squeezed the button a lot harder than necessary. The Claymore mine instantly responded, spitting out 700 hundred steel balls at 1200 meters per second.

There was a roar of flame and the grinding of metal.

The Mech unit came through the flames and placed the left foot down, firing another burst as Apollo rolled away from the targeted area. The large rounds barely missed him as they cut through the trees and dirt surrounding him. The Mech Unit tried to turn slightly to pursue Apollo’s new angle. It pushed off with its left and tried to land on its right foot.

There was no right foot anymore. With nothing to land on, it crashed with a thunderous sound.

On its side, the turret spun back and forth, digging deep furrows into the ground as the machine tried to lift itself back into a shooting position.

The guns stayed pointed uselessly at the tops of the trees.

“BB, turn on all stealth countermeasures,” Apollo said quietly as he got back to his feet and readjusted his pack.

“Of course, Apollo,” BB said.

Pulling the rifle off his back, Apollo rested the barrel across his wrist. The pains in his hand slowly reappeared as the adrenaline wore off. His left side ached from all the running and jumping. He felt old.

Apollo sighed and then began moving in a slow jog.

“Time to find the others,” Apollo said.

“I’m sorry, I don’t understand the command,” BB said.

Two days later

“I don’t think they can keep going much longer.”

Eve tried to stifle a yawn with the back of her hand. Dark circles under her eyes suggested that she needed a break herself. Although she was tired, her light green eyes were bright and aware, still scanning the area for threats.

Back at the trailer, Apollo had been concerned that she had lost the motivation for this mission. Things had changed after the fight a few days ago. Killing a Skin had brought the old Eve back. Of course the old Eve was also the one that he wasn’t sure could be trusted. Her snapping out of depression because she brutally murdered a Skin wasn’t comforting.

“The forest ends in a few more kilometers—” Apollo said, stopping as he heard a rustling noise. A wild turkey rushed out some brush, cackling loudly at the sudden presence of humans.
